Biography

James Wright is a Full Professor in the School of Music at Carleton University. He completed his Ph.D. at McGill University in 2002, where his dissertation on Schoenberg and Wittgenstein earned him the Governor-General’s Gold Medal, a distinction in the history of McGill University. His research interests are expansive and delve into music philosophy and aesthetics, music perception, film music, 20th-century music history, post-tonal music theory, and analysis, as well as dance music and the history of music theory. Among his notable publications are 'Schoenberg, Wittgenstein, Vienna Circle', which received the Lewis Lockwood Award from the American Musicological Society, and 'Schoenberg’s Chamber Music, Schoenberg’s World', which he co-edited. Additionally, he authored 'Shot, Scored: Life Music Eldon Rathburn', examining the prolific career of a Canadian composer who created over 275 film scores. He has also co-organized a conference titled 'Music Antifascism: Reflections Past Possibilities Present' and recently co-edited 'Monstrosity, Identity, Music: Mediating Uncanny Creatures Frankenstein Videogames'. Wright’s contributions have made a significant impact on contemporary musicology, bridging historical contexts with modern interpretations.
