Dr. James Young

Biography

James Young is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Victoria, having joined the department in 1985. His main areas of expertise include the philosophy of language and the philosophy of art, with a particular interest in the philosophy of music and the moral and ontological questions raised by artistic expression. In 2015, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, recognizing his significant contributions to the field. James has authored several influential works, including 'Global Anti-realism' and 'Cultural Appropriation in the Arts', and has translated key philosophical texts, expanding access to critical ideas in aesthetics and music philosophy. His work not only includes books but also numerous articles in refereed journals, showcasing his ongoing engagement with philosophical discourse. Currently, he is engaged in various projects, including an edited collection of essays and translations of classical texts in aesthetics. Outside academia, he serves as the Artistic Director Emeritus of the Early Music Society of the Islands, reflecting his passion for music both as an art form and a practical interest. Throughout his career, he has received multiple accolades, including the David H. Turpin Gold Medal for Career Achievement in Research in 2022.
