Biography

Jamie Harding has worked in the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) field for 20 years, contributing to a wide range of projects, including tracking deforestation rates in Southeast Asia, predicting groundwater recharge rates in Southern Arizona, and mapping bike routes in Baltimore City. Joining the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future in 2010, Jamie found GIS skills to be a natural fit for advancing the Center’s mission. At the Center, Jamie has developed an appreciation for the complex food system at the local level in Maryland. Jamie enjoys the challenge of presenting elements of the food system—and their interconnections—in a way that people can easily process and understand. A significant contribution has been the development of the Maryland Food System Map, a web mapping application designed to serve as a useful tool for understanding Maryland's food system. Additionally, Jamie has contributed to the Center’s research on Baltimore City's food environment, motivated by personal experiences such as a grandmother's efforts to bring healthier food options to their neighborhood and engaging with researchers and educators to improve awareness of food environments.
