Biography

Jamie L. Jones is an Associate Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he is also a Conrad Humanities Scholar. His research focuses on the cultural dimensions of energy transition, infrastructure, logistics, and climate change, particularly in relation to the history of U.S. whaling and energy usage. His book 'Rendered Obsolete: Energy Culture Afterlife U.S. Whaling' (UNC Press, 2023) investigates how U.S. literature, art, and popular culture have represented energy transitions throughout history. His work has received recognition, being shortlisted for the 2024 Modern Language Association Prize Book and receiving an Honorable Mention for the 2025 Ecocritical Book Award from the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment. Jones’s interests also include the cultural history of the 19th-century U.S. energy booms and logistics and shipping in relation to climate change. He has been published in various journals and has received funding from institutions such as the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. As part of public humanities, he has served as a guest curator and consulted for specialized museums. He teaches courses on 19th-century American literature and environmental humanities and has received numerous teaching awards during his career.
