Biography

Jamie Martin is an international historian focusing on the history of international political economy and empire, particularly in the era of the world wars. He is the author of 'Meddlers: Sovereignty, Empire, Birth of Global Economic Governance' (Harvard University Press, 2022), which charts the origins of the rise of international institutions that govern global capitalism during and after the world wars. His research highlights political resistance generated across the globe, particularly in Western Europe, the Balkans, the United States, Latin America, China, and colonial Southeast Asia. His public writing on issues such as the history of central banking, financial crises, and global governance has appeared in notable publications including the New York Times, London Review of Books, Nation, n+1, Dissent, Bookforum, and The Guardian. Currently, Martin is working on a book project that explores the global economic consequences of the world wars, focusing on their effects on trade, shipping, supply chains, and finance in the principal theaters of conflict in Europe and the Middle East. He teaches and advises students on topics related to the history of international political economy, the world wars, and modern empire.
