Biography

Jamie Mayerfeld is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Law, Societies & Justice at the University of Washington. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Princeton in 1992. His research focuses on political theory and human rights, and he is the author of 'The Promise of Human Rights: Constitutional Government, Democratic Legitimacy, International Law' published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2016. Mayerfeld analyzes the relationship between constitutional democracy and the protection of human rights, arguing for the importance of both domestic and international guardians. His earlier work includes 'Suffering and Moral Responsibility' (Oxford University Press, 1999), and he has published numerous articles on themes including political theory, moral philosophy, and international criminal law. He has taught various courses covering topics such as the history of political thought, democratic theory, and political theory related to contemporary issues including climate change. In the 2019-20 academic year, he served as president of the Western Political Science Association and is currently a co-coordinator for Political Scientists for Sustainability.
