Biography

Jamie Paik is a full professor and the founding director of the Reconfigurable Robotics Lab (RRL) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL). She is a core member of the Swiss NCCR robotics group, focusing her research on soft robotics and novel robotic designs. Paik obtained her PhD from Seoul National University, where she designed a humanoid robotic arm and hand in collaboration with Samsung Electronics. Her notable prototypes include a lightweight 7-DoF humanoid arm, weighing just 3.7 kg, and an 8-DoF hand. Following her doctoral studies, she held postdoctoral positions at the Institut des Systèmes Intelligents et de Robotique at Université Pierre Marie Curie in Paris, where she developed laparoscopic tools that have been internationally patented and commercialized through Endocontrol-medical.com. She has also worked at Harvard University's Microrobotics Laboratory, where she advanced the development of unconventional robotic systems. Her recent research emphasizes soft robotics and self-morphing Robogami, a technology that allows robots to transform between 2D and 3D forms by folding, akin to the art of origami.
