Dr. Jamin Pelkey

Biography

Jamin Pelkey is a Full Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, specializing in the fields of semiotics, linguistics, poetics, and embodied cognition. He is currently serving as the Graduate Program Director in the Graduate Program in Communication & Culture. Pelkey's academic journey includes a PhD in Linguistics from La Trobe University, Melbourne, completed in 2009, along with an MA from Payap University and a BA from Montana State University. His research interests revolve around the evolution of language and cognition, often employing mixed methods to examine how bodily experiences relate to the development of human consciousness. Pelkey has held significant positions, including President of the International Association for Cognitive Semiotics and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Semiotic. He has received multiple awards for his teaching and research contributions, including four federal grants from SSHRC and Mitacs, and the TMU Early Research Career Excellence Award in 2018. His publications encompass several monographs and edited collections, focusing on ethnolinguistic research and interdisciplinary inquiries into the meaning as a symbolic system. Pelkey's expertise extends internationally, having lectured in various countries, and he remains active in significant collaborative projects in linguistics.
