Dr. Jamuna Samuel

Biography

Jamuna Samuel has been a Lecturer in Music at the University of Pennsylvania since January 2014. Her academic credentials include a BA/MA in Music from Yale University and a PhD in Music from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. She has held positions at institutions such as Stony Brook University and Wellesley College. Her research addresses interdisciplinary issues in twentieth-century music, with a particular focus on the intersections between Italian and American music. Her teaching interests encompass film music, performance, analysis, and listening literature, and she has taught a range of topics including tonal and post-tonal theory, twentieth-century music history, and the role of performers in music history. She has co-organized scholarly events that explore the work and impact of composers such as Luigi Dallapiccola and has been involved in outreach initiatives that connect music with broader cultural discourses. Samuel is currently the vice-president of Philadelphia's Network for New Music and previously served as Secretary of the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic. Her publications and presentations contribute significantly to the dialogue surrounding music theory and its history.
