Biography

Jan-Carel Diehl is a full professor of Design Inclusive Sustainable Healthcare at the Delft University of Technology and a Medical Delta Professor at the Erasmus Medical Center. With 30 years of experience in Design Sustainability within academic and industrial contexts, he has developed Design Sustainability Manuals for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which have been translated into multiple languages and used by hundreds of universities and companies worldwide. He co-leads significant projects such as the 6 million Euro ESCH-R project aimed at creating Evidence-based Strategies for Circular Hospitals and the Erasmus+ DESHEALTH project focused on systemic design approaches in education and training for Sustainable Healthcare. His research encompasses environmental assessments (life cycle assessment, material flow analysis), hotspot identification, and the development of Circular Interventions in healthcare systems. He has published over 250 academic articles, supervised approximately 300 MSc graduation students, successfully completed nine PhD projects, and acted as an external examiner for 16 PhD defenses. He is recognized with multiple Design Sustainability Awards.
