Biography

Jan-Marino Ramirez is a Professor of Neurological Surgery and the Zain Nadella Endowed Chair in Pediatric Neurosciences at the University of Washington. He serves as the Director of the Center for Integrative Brain Research and is a Principal Investigator at Seattle Children's Hospital. His research aims to understand the neuronal basis of various brain functions and find novel ways to treat neurological disorders in children, including epilepsy, Rett syndrome, brain tumors, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Ramirez has extensively studied cellular mechanisms of neuronal networks that generate rhythmic motor activity in both invertebrates and vertebrates. His current work focuses on analyzing the in vitro respiratory network in mice and understanding developmental changes in these networks. His lab employs electrophysiological and immunohistochemical techniques to investigate the properties of single neurons within functional neuronal networks. Ramirez's research is particularly interested in the developmental alterations in cellular properties that respond to hypoxia, as these mechanisms have significant scientific and clinical implications for conditions such as sleep apnea and SIDS.
