Biography

Jan Dirk Baetens studied Law at the University of Antwerp and Art History at the University of Leuven. He defended his PhD dissertation at the University of Leuven in 2011 on the 19th-century Belgian history painter Henri Leys. His research primarily focuses on 19th-century history painting and the development of the modern art market. Baetens has a keen interest in themes including nineteenth-century painting, historicism, and the art market. He is a member of the editorial board for 'Oud Holland: Journal of Art in the Low Countries' and serves as a co-editor for 'XIX: Studies in 19th-Century Art and Visual Culture.' Additionally, he holds a position on the scientific advisory board of the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library in Antwerp since September 1, 2020.
