Biography

Jan Drgona is an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and a member of the Ralph S. O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute. His innovative research focuses on differentiable programming, scientific machine learning, dynamical systems, optimization, control, building energy systems, and process control. Drgona has significant experience in deploying machine learning and advanced control methods to tackle real-world applications in building energy systems and industrial process control. Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, he was a principal investigator and research data scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where he also served as lead software developer of the Neuromancer SciML library, which became a popular open-source repository for solving constrained optimization and physics-informed machine learning problems. Drgona is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Association for Computing Machinery and serves as a reviewer for several related journals.
