Biography

Jan Hein Furnée is a professor of European Cultural History at Radboud University. His research focuses on the history of urban leisure culture, consumer culture, tourism, and cultural policy in the Netherlands and Western Europe from 1800 onwards. He has published extensively on subjects like social clubs, cultural associations, and concert life, as well as on shopping, grand cafés, zoos, seaside resorts, ice skating, urban cultural policy, and tourism promotion. He is currently completing a new book on leisure and personal identities in Amsterdam during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Alongside Peter Borsay, he serves as the general editor for a six-volume series titled 'Cultural History of Leisure' to be published by Bloomsbury in 2024. Furnée studied history at the University of Groningen, where he obtained his PhD. He has previously worked as a lecturer in the Theater, Film, and Television Studies program at Utrecht University and held the position of Assistant Professor of Modern History at the University of Amsterdam from 2005 to 2015. Additionally, he has held various roles in editorial and leadership capacities, including as chair of the KNHG (Royal Dutch Historical Association) and the Huizinga Institute, the national research school for cultural history.
