Jan obtained undergraduate Master degrees from the University of South Bohemia, where he helped discover novel algal-related apicomplexan parasites. He continued his studies of the evolution of apicomplexan parasitism and plastid organelles, earning a PhD degree from the University of British Columbia, which he completed in 2013. Following this, Jan held independent fellowships at San Diego State University as a CIFAR Global Scholar from 2014 to 2015 and at University College London as an Excellence Research Fellow from 2016 to 2019, where he discovered new groups of eukaryotes and conducted research on phytoplankton evolution. In January 2021, Jan established a research group at the Institute of Microbiology in Trebon, Czechia, which he co-leads with Eva Horakova. In December 2021, he joined the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton as a Lecturer.
