Jan Kluijtmans completed his medical training with a specialization in Clinical Microbiology at Erasmus Medical University in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He obtained his PhD in 1996 with a thesis on 'Nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus: key preventing staphylococcal disease.' His scientific career has been focused on the epidemiology and control of nosocomial infections, with a particular interest in Staphylococcus aureus, surgical site infections, and antimicrobial resistance. He has been involved in the development of national and international guidelines for infection control, especially regarding strategies to control Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and the prevention of surgical site infections. In 2006, he was appointed as a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Infection Control at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam. In 2014, he transitioned to the University Medical Center Utrecht, where he is part of the Julius Center and leads work packages for the Combacte program. He has held various external positions, including being a member of the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID).
