Biography

Since April 2017, Jan Lazardzig has been a Professor of Theater Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. He served as Dean of the Department of Philosophy and Humanities from 2023 to 2025 and as Study Dean from 2021 to 2023. He was an Associate Professor in Theater Performance Studies at the Universiteit van Amsterdam from 2013 to 2017 and has held various academic positions, including a Research Fellow at the International Research College in Cultural Studies in Vienna in 2014, and guest teacher roles at international institutions. Lazardzig's academic journey began with a degree in History and Theater Studies at Freie Universität Berlin, where he also completed his PhD in 2006 with a thesis on the relationship between theater machines and knowledge production in the 17th century. His research focuses on the history of theater technology, censorship, and the historiography of theater studies. He has published extensively on these subjects and serves on the editorial boards of relevant journals. Lazardzig is actively involved in various academic committees and is a member of the board of the Ada Lovelace Center for Digital Humanities.
