Jan Liphardt is an associate professor in Bioengineering at Stanford University. He completed his BA at Reed College and his PhD at Cambridge University, where his research focused on the use of stochastic context-free grammars for identifying genomic patterns, particularly in the context of biological regulatory patterns and the detection of palindromic sequences. After completing his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley in the labs of Carlos Bustamante and Nacho Tinoco Jr., where he developed novel methods for studying the dynamics of small RNA systems. He joined the Berkeley Physics faculty in 2004 and has received several honors, including the Searle Scholar Award and the Sloan Research Fellowship. His research lab is funded by federal agencies such as NCI, NIGMS, NSF, and DOE. He teaches courses such as 'Engineering Living Matter' and seminars involving artificial intelligence and blockchain applications in bioengineering.
