Dr. Jan Spijker

Biography

Jan Spijker, MD, PhD, is a professor at Radboud University, where he holds an endowed chair in the Behavioural Science Institute, specializing in Clinical Psychology. He is particularly focused on chronic depression, where his research encompasses the epidemiology, origins, and treatment of this condition, with a notable emphasis on treatment-resistant depression. His research group conducts randomized controlled trials (RCTs) exploring augmentation therapies for chronic depression. Over the course of his career, he has contributed to more than 100 articles published in peer-reviewed psychiatric journals, highlighting his commitment to advancing knowledge in the field. He also plays a key role in updating multidisciplinary guidelines for depression and is the vice-chair of the National Audit Committee for Mental Health Centres of Excellence in the Netherlands. In addition to his academic roles, he has served as the editor for the Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie since January 2014 and has directed the depression program at Pro Persona since January 2007.
