Jan Stake is a Full Professor at Chalmers University of Technology in the Terahertz Millimetre Wave Laboratory, where he leads the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience. He obtained his MSc in Electrical Engineering and PhD in Microwave Electronics from Chalmers University of Technology in 1994 and 1999, respectively. His research primarily focuses on the exploration of fundamental science related to terahertz waves (0.3-10 THz) and the application of terahertz technology in practical fields. This region of the electromagnetic spectrum can detect atoms and molecules essential for life, and plays a vital role in radio telescopes used for understanding the universe's origins. His research group specializes in terahertz semiconductor electronics and has contributed instrumentation for space missions, including the development of terahertz diode circuits for the submillimeter wave instrument onboard the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice) and the second-generation MetOp satellites. Currently, he is working on creating efficient integrated THz components for future far-infrared space science instrumentation. In addition to his research activities, Jan teaches courses in semiconductor device physics and microwave engineering and runs a journal club for PhD students to discuss recent advancements in these fields. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology from 2016 to 2018 and chaired the IEEE THz Science Technology Paper Award committee from 2019 to 2021. He has been an elected member of the board of the International Society for Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz) from 2017 to 2024 and was appointed as a visiting research fellow at the National Physical Laboratory in the UK in 2023.
