Biography

Jan Stegemann is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Director of the Advanced Medical Product Engineering Development (AMPED) program. His research interests are concentrated in the fields of biomaterials, cell-based therapies, and their applications in cardiovascular and orthopaedic areas. He teaches courses in biomaterials, tissue engineering, and medical product development. Stegemann has also held significant administrative roles, including Associate Chair for Master's Programs and for Undergraduate Education in the Biomedical Engineering Department, and he has contributed to numerous faculty recruitment, curriculum development, and departmental planning initiatives. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Bioengineering Program at UM-Dearborn and participates in various government panels, including the FDA Advisory Committee on Cellular, Tissue, and Gene Therapy. Stegemann is recognized as a fellow in multiple professional societies, including the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and the Society for Biomaterials. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto and his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
