Dr. Jan Urke

Biography

Jan Urke is an accomplished double bass player and instructor based at the University of Alberta. He holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto and has furthered his studies in orchestral performance at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Since the mid-1980s, Urke has been a sessional instructor of double bass at the University of Alberta, contributing significantly to the music department. In addition to his teaching role, he is currently the Principal Double Bass with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and has performed with various prestigious orchestras including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and the Bolshoi Ballet Orchestra. Urke's extensive career includes freelancing with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, National Ballet Orchestra, Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, and performing as a soloist with the Edmonton Symphony and Edmonton Chamber Orchestra. He served as a Resource Artist at the Banff Centre during several summers, indicating his commitment to music education and performance excellence. Urke's professional highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. His engagement in collaborative and orchestral music showcases his extensive knowledge and passion for the double bass and chamber music.
