Biography

Jan Veldink is a Full Professor at UMC Utrecht University, where he is part of the strategic research program focused on understanding the genetic and environmental causes of ALS-related diseases. His research includes the development of a custom reference panel that enables the interrogation of rare genetic variations across large samples of genotyped cases and controls, which was notably highlighted in the work by Van Rheenen et al. in Nature Genetics (2016). He is also the lead of a large-scale international collaboration, Project Mine, which aims to process whole-genome sequencing of 15,000 ALS cases and 7,500 population-matched controls. This initiative entails the completion of over 10,000 genomes and the standardization of phenotype information alongside whole-genome sequence data. Furthermore, Jan leads efforts in neurogenetics research, particularly in elucidating the genetic contributions to motor neuron diseases, a collection of disorders that predominantly result in progressive weakness and/or spasticity. His previous roles include co-coordinating the Euro-MOTOR project, aimed at identifying cures for motor neuron degeneration, and he has received several accolades, including the Brainfoundation Personal Fellowship and the International Young Investigator ENCALS award.
