Biography

Professor Jan J. Wilkens conducts research in medical physics, with a primary focus on radiation therapy for cancer patients. His major research interests include optimizing treatment planning for protons and ion beam therapy, as well as developing physical and radiobiological models to describe the effects of radiation on patients. He is engaged in the implementation of modern, image-based techniques in tumor therapy. Wilkens studied physics at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and Nottingham (UK), completing his PhD in 2004 at Heidelberg. He subsequently worked as a member of the research staff at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, and held a postdoctoral research position at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, USA. In 2008, he was appointed to a position at Technical University of Munich's Klinikum rechts der Isar, where he heads the Medical Physics Unit in the Department of Radiation Therapy.
