Biography

Jana Weiss is a DAAD Associate Professor at the University of Texas at Austin, having joined the Department of Germanic Studies in 2022. She specializes in U.S. and transatlantic history, focusing on 19th and 20th century immigration, religious history, and the impacts of ethnicity and racism. Weiss completed her PhD in History at the University of Muenster, Germany in 2013, with a dissertation that explored the complex relationship between civil religion and U.S. patriotic holidays during significant national crises, particularly in the context of the Cold War. Her research has received substantial funding from various organizations including the German Research Foundation and the German Academic Exchange Service. Currently, she is working on a book titled “A Lager Beer Revolution: German American Brewers Pre-Prohibition USA,” which investigates the technological and cultural transfer of brewing practices from Germany to the United States. In addition to her research, she actively publishes in prominent journals and serves as a co-editor for several academic anthologies and yearbooks.
