Biography

Jane Akhurst is an Adjunct Fellow at the National Drug & Alcohol Research Centre at the University of New South Wales. She has a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours and a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology, both from the University of Tasmania. Her research interests primarily relate to the epidemiology of alcohol and drug use harms, with a focus on pharmaceutical opioids. Since 2015, she has worked on a range of projects examining injecting drug use, the effects of opioid use on cognition, opioid agonist treatment, and drug-related morbidity and mortality. Her PhD dissertation explored the relationships between pharmaceutical opioid use and cognitive harms experienced by individuals with chronic pain, including challenges related to memory and experiences of injuries.
