Dr. Jane Champion

Biography

Dr. Jane Dimmitt Champion received her BSN from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, followed by her MSN in Adult Health Nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, an MA in Bilingual/Bicultural Studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a PhD in Nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She also earned a DNP from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Memphis. Dr. Champion is an internationally renowned researcher focusing on health promotion and risk reduction among urban and rural ethnic minority women and adolescents. Over the past 20 years, her research has evolved from initial descriptive studies to multi-component, primary care-based interventions aimed at improving sexual and general health outcomes in low-income populations. Her notable intervention, Project Image, effectively promoted healthy sexual behaviors among ethnic minority adolescent women and has been recognized by the CDC. Dr. Champion has published 150 peer-reviewed articles and has presented her work at over 350 conferences. She has been actively involved in numerous NIH-funded research projects and has received several prestigious awards for her contributions to nursing research and education, including induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in 2018.
