Biography

Jane Ushiyama Dinwoodie is a Lecturer in Nineteenth-Century American History at University College London. She is currently working on a book titled 'Remain: Indian Non-Removal in the Nineteenth-Century American South', which focuses on the phenomenon of Indian removal and how various Indigenous nations successfully resisted the federal efforts to relocate them west of the Mississippi River. Jane's research explores the complexities of sovereignty, state development, and the dynamics of the American empire, emphasizing the stories of those who avoided removal. Before joining UCL, she held positions as a Research Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge University, and as an Advisory Council Dissertation Fellow at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her DPhil in History at Oxford University in 2017. Her research has been supported by various organizations, including the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council and the American Historical Association. Jane has published significant works that delve into Indigenous histories and their contestations during the American Civil War and beyond.
