Biography

Jane Duckett is the Edward Caird Chair of Politics at the University of Glasgow and Director of the Scottish Centre for China Research. She has been a fellow of the British Academy since 2016, the Royal Society of Edinburgh since 2019, and the Academy of Social Sciences since 2019. Her research predominantly focuses on contemporary Chinese politics, particularly how health and social policies create redistributive consequences within the authoritarian political system of China. Duckett has contributed significantly to the understanding of China's health policies through several publications, including her notable works 'Entrepreneurial State in China' and 'Chinese State’s Retreat from Health.' She has led various projects examining the effects of global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, on Chinese governance and societal impact. In addition to her research, she has held various leadership roles and is a member of numerous academic councils and editorial boards. Her educational background includes degrees from the University of Leeds and SOAS, University of London, complemented by extensive field experience in Chinese social development and policy.
