Biography

Jane Elliott is a professor in the Department of English at King's College London. She has a deep academic background with a BA in English from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, followed by an MA and PhD from Rutgers University. Elliott began her career as a lecturer in Contemporary Literature at the University of York for six years before taking a postdoctoral fellowship at the Pembroke Center at Brown University. Her research interests focus on contemporary literature and culture, with particular emphasis on the intersection of vernacular forms, political theory, cultural theory, and aesthetics, especially in relation to post-war American Left political culture and second-wave feminism. Her recent monograph, "The Microeconomic Mode: Political Subjectivity and Contemporary Popular Aesthetics," published by Columbia University Press in 2018, explores the dominant cultural formations of the 21st century that combine aesthetic strategies with narratives focused on extreme circumstances and threats to survival. Elliott welcomes PhD applications in these areas. In her teaching, she focuses on contemporary literature and popular culture, with modules that examine theoretical work enacted in popular aesthetic forms. Additionally, she collaborates with Dr. Seb Franklin to co-convene the MA in Contemporary Literature, Culture, and Theory program.
