Biography

Jane Francis is a Professor of Classics and Modern Languages at Concordia University. Her primary research focuses on the reconstruction of the landscape of ancient Crete and the cultural practices of its inhabitants. Specifically, she analyzes Roman ceramics through macroscopic methods to identify sources of clay and define patterns in trade and exchange. Her studies include ceramic assemblages from various sites in western Crete, such as Sphakia and Phalasarna, along with investigations in central Crete, including Skoteino Cave. Jane has undertaken experimental reconstructions of ceramic production and is actively engaged in field research and publication. Currently, she is focusing on the study of Roman pottery within the Khavania Survey in northeast Crete and the final publication of findings from the Sphakia Survey Project. Her research interests extend to ancient beekeeping, with a significant publication on Graeco-Roman beehives.
