Professor Jane Golley is an economist at the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics within the Crawford School of Public Policy at The Australian National University (ANU). She graduated from ANU with a Bachelor of Economics with Honours in 1993. Her lifelong interest in China began with a brief period in the Asia Section of the Australian Commonwealth Treasury in 1993 and continued at the University of Oxford, where she wrote her DPhil thesis titled 'The Dynamics of Chinese Regional Development: Market Nature, State Nurture'. Golley's research encompasses a wide array of topics primarily centered on the Chinese economy, analyzing the intersection of multiple disciplines. Her early works focused on the uneven patterns of economic geography in China’s industrial development, prompting continued investigations into sources of inequality including rural-urban gender disparities in education and income. She has also studied the economic implications of demographic changes in China and the global effects of one- and two-child policies, as well as the relationship between economic growth and environmental issues, especially during China's quest for 'green growth'. More recent interdisciplinary projects have explored China's growing geoeconomic capabilities and the political dynamics affecting Australia-China relations. Golley has taught a Masters-Level course on the Chinese economy at Crawford School since 2016 and has been actively involved in public policy discussions regarding China's rise and its relationship with Australia.
