Biography

Jane Heggie is a key member and anesthesia lead at the University Health Network's Toronto General Hospital, where she manages care for a complex patient population within one of the largest Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) programs in the world. She has developed a professional collaborative relationship with the Hospital for Sick Children to ensure a smooth transition of congenital patients from pediatric to adult care. Under her leadership, the cardiac intensive care fellowship program at Toronto General Hospital has become one of the five largest cardiac anesthesia fellowship programs in North America, recruiting a minimum of seven to eight cardiac fellows each year. Dr. Heggie has also developed and introduced the Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) reading series as a major component of the educational curriculum for the cardiac intensive care fellowship program. In addition to her contributions to cardiac anesthesia, she has designed and implemented new fellowship programs focused on liver major surgical oncology and advanced clinical airway practices, introducing a formal structure that includes selection committees, mentoring, and daily evaluation with formal feedback sessions.
