Biography

Jane Stuart-Smith is a Professor of Phonetics and Sociolinguistics at the University of Glasgow, specializing in the interplay between language and society, particularly in the context of sociophonetics, phonological variation, and sound change. She obtained her BA in Classics from University College London and pursued her MPhil and DPhil in Comparative Philology at Oxford, conducting research on historical phonology. With extensive experience in academia since 1996, she has developed a robust research profile, focusing on the sociophonetic dynamics of Glaswegian and other dialects, often employing cutting-edge methodologies such as ultrasound tongue imaging. Stuart-Smith's interdisciplinary work has led to collaborations involving bilingualism, language variation, and the impacts of media on speech.
