Biography

Jane Wettach is a William B. McGuire Clinical Professor Emerita at Duke University School of Law, where she directs the Children’s Law Clinic and has taught Education Law. An experienced speaker on special education law and issues related to children's educational rights, she has been recognized with the Defender of Justice Award by the North Carolina Justice Center in 2010 for her litigation efforts. Since joining the Duke Law faculty in 1994, she has focused on poverty law, having worked for 13 years in legal aid offices, and has a notable record of arguing cases in the U.S. Supreme Court and North Carolina Supreme Court. Her leadership as lead counsel in King v. Beaufort County Board of Education established the right for students in North Carolina to attend alternative schools during suspension cases. Prior to establishing the Children’s Law Clinic in 2002, she was the supervising attorney for Duke’s AIDS Legal Project and an instructor in the Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing Program. Wettach is also an accomplished author, with works including Parents’ Guide to Special Education in North Carolina and contributions to the Special Education Advocacy Guide for Student Advocacy in North Carolina. She earned her B.A. in journalism in 1976 and her J.D. with honors in 1981 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
