Biography

Janessa Clark is a BESSIE Award-nominated choreographer, dance filmmaker, performer, and installation artist. Her practice combines dance, video, new technology, and language to create movement-driven art for stage, screen, and site-specific environments. Her work challenges traditional modes of choreography and spectatorship through co-authorship. Janessa holds an MA in Performance Practices Research from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where she received distinction for her thesis titled 'Vicious Terrain: Rupturing Choreography Co-Authorship.' She also earned a BFA in Choreography from the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University, where she received an Undergraduate Award for Excellence in choreographic work. Janessa founded and directed the New York City-based dance collective, KILTERBOX, from 2001 to 2012 before it dissolved into nomadthenewcompany in 2012. Her recent accomplishments include various residencies and fellowships in Europe and the United States and a BESSIE Award nomination for Outstanding Production for her work 'Communion.' As an accomplished dance pedagogue, she specializes in dance improvisation, choreographic practices, filmmaking, and modern dance technique, teaching classes, workshops, and courses across Europe and South Africa.
