Biography

Janet Becker received her Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of California San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where she studied under John W. Miles. Following her doctorate, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia from 1989 to 1991 and as an NSF postdoctoral Fellow at UCSD's Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Scripps Institution of Oceanography from 1991 to 1993. From 1994 to 2017, she was a faculty member at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she held positions as an Assistant Professor in Ocean Engineering and later became a Professor in Geology and Geophysics. In 2017, she joined the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD as a Teaching Professor in the departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Her research focuses on geophysical fluid dynamics, observational nearshore oceanography, and nonlinear waves, with a current emphasis on wave-driven inundation of reef-fringed shorelines and future sea level rise scenarios.
