Dr. Janet Carsten

Biography

Janet Carsten is a Professor Emerita of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, where she has conducted extensive research in Malaysia and Britain. She completed her PhD at the London School of Economics and has held roles such as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge and a Lecturer at the University of Manchester. Carsten has delivered numerous guest lectures and keynote addresses internationally, including at Johns Hopkins University and UCLA. Notably, she was awarded a three-year Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship and served as the Principal Investigator of the ERC Advanced Grant project 'A Global Anthropology Transforming Marriage' from 2017 to 2022. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Carsten's research interests encompass a diverse range of topics including kinship, gender, relatedness, and the intersection of migration and memory. Her methodological approaches bridge ethnographic fieldwork and theoretical scrutiny, making significant contributions to the field of anthropology.
