Biography

Jan Clarkson graduated in dentistry from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1987. After a decade at the University of Manchester, she joined the Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry and contributed to the Dental Health Services Research Unit at the University of Dundee. Clarkson has directed the Effective Dental Practice Programme, focusing on implementing high-quality dental research into primary care practices. As a founding member of the Cochrane Oral Health Group, she plays a pivotal role in influencing research activities and enhancing clinical effectiveness across Scotland. Appointed as an Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean for NHS Education Scotland, she holds a 20% appointment as Clinical Professor of Dental Research at the University of Manchester. Her qualifications include Fellowships from several esteemed institutions and memberships in numerous professional committees. Her research interests center around dental clinical effectiveness and knowledge translation, engaging in both primary and secondary research methods, including randomised controlled trials and Cochrane systematic reviews. Clarkson’s ongoing research focuses on late-phase translation guidance in dentistry, influencing national dental education policies, and evaluating strategies for improving oral health outcomes. She actively collaborates with various international researchers and is committed to addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals through her work in dental research.
