Biography

Janet M. Davis is an Associate Professor and Director of the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin. Her teaching focuses on American popular culture and social cultural history, with courses that explore American foreign relations, animal studies, American social movements, and transnational American Studies, particularly in the context of modern South Asia. Davis is the author of the award-winning book 'The Circus Age: Culture and Society at the American Big Top' (2002), recognized as an Outstanding Academic Book by Choice. Her latest research project, 'The Gospel Kindness,' analyzes the development of the U.S. animal welfare movement and its ties to ideologies of American benevolence and exceptionalism during the Great Awakening era just before World War II, emphasizing the religious dimensions of this movement within the broader spectrum of American expansionism. She received her Ph.D. in History from the University of Wisconsin in 1998 and has been awarded several fellowships for her teaching excellence at UT Austin.
