Dr. Janet Delaine

Biography

Janet DeLaine is an Associate Professor of Roman Archaeology at the University of Oxford, where she is also an Emeritus Fellow at Wolfson College. She holds a PhD from the University of Adelaide and has an extensive academic background, having previously worked as a Junior Research Fellow at St John's College and as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Reading. Her research interests focus on the built environment of the Roman world, exploring themes of architecture, urbanism, and the Mediterranean's history. Notably, DeLaine examines the Roman building industry, the development of urban centers such as Ostia, and the intricacies of Roman bath houses. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her contributions to the field, being elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1999 and becoming a Corresponding Member of the Archaeological Institute of America in 2010. Her work has also involved significant collaboration with the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, where she held a Senior Research Fellowship. Janet DeLaine continues to engage with both research and teaching, contributing to a deeper understanding of Roman art, archaeology, and architecture through her publications and academic activities.
