Biography

Janet Njelesani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy at NYU Steinhardt. She holds a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science from the University of Toronto and is a licensed occupational therapist. Her scholarship enhances the philosophical and methodological foundations of occupational science and therapy through a critical approach that guides occupation-based inquiry. Janet's research addresses significant health and societal issues, particularly the factors affecting occupational participation among historically underrepresented populations. She is currently focused on promoting equitable inclusion and participation in occupations within school settings and caregiving roles. Janet has extensive experience in various regions including North America, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Africa, bringing a breadth of clinical consulting expertise gained over 15 years as a clinician. She has provided disability rehabilitation and technical advice to governments, United Nations agencies, and international NGOs. Janet has published and presented widely, contributing to seminal publications such as the World Report on Disability and UNICEF's rights-based approach to inclusive education for children with disabilities. She has received numerous accolades including the AOTA's Roster of Fellows International Service Award and the AOTF's Mid-Career Research Excellence Award. Additionally, she serves as an Associate Editor for the OTJR: Occupational Science Section and is actively engaged in developing the occupational therapy program at NYU Steinhardt.
