Biography

Janet Sabel is the Director of the Center for Civil Justice at NYU School of Law and the Founding Director of the Access Justice Initiative. She has dedicated over forty years to advocating for social and economic justice, including her role as Executive Director and Attorney-in-Chief at the Legal Aid Society in New York City. Janet has an extensive background representing clients in Housing Court, spearheading law reform cases, and serving as General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer at Legal Aid. She also spent eight years with the New York State Attorney General’s office, supervising enforcement work in the Social and Economic Justice Bureaus and addressing issues related to civil rights and consumer protection. Recognized by various organizations for her contributions to public service and social advocacy, Janet holds a BA from Harvard College and a JD from NYU Law School, where she was a Root Tilden scholar. Janet clerked for the Honorable Frank M. Coffin at the Circuit Court of Appeals, further enriching her legal experience. Her courses include Professional Responsibility and the Public Interest Seminar, which explores the ethical dimensions of public interest law and the responsibilities of lawyers in addressing justice gaps.
