Dr. Janice Barry

Biography

Janice Barry is an Associate Professor at the University of Waterloo's School of Planning. Her research focuses on the politics of community engagement and collaborative approaches to planning policies, institutions, and governance. Barry is particularly interested in settler colonialism and Indigenous/non-Indigenous relations as they pertain to contemporary planning practice and the decolonization of planning education. She employs interpretative critical policy analysis and qualitative research methodologies, including case studies and interview-based methods. Barry is actively involved in several funded research projects, including investigations into on-reserve housing co-design and Indigenous housing sustainability. She has a strong commitment to community-engaged teaching and mentoring students in independent research. Barry has co-authored significant publications in the field of urban planning and community engagement, demonstrating her dedication to advancing knowledge on meaningful coexistence and recognition of Indigenous rights within land-use planning in Canada and Australia.
