Biography

Professor Janine Benedet joined the law school faculty in 2005 after teaching at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and practicing labor and employment law. She graduated with an L.L.B. from the University of British Columbia and undertook graduate studies at the University of Michigan, where she obtained an LL.M. and S.J.D. Professor Benedet teaches criminal law, labor law, legal ethics, and law regarding sexual offenses. She has served as Associate Dean and Dean pro tem and is a member of the British Columbia Bar, engaging in pro bono litigation for sexual violence cases. Her research focuses on legal responses to men's sexual violence against women, examining barriers within the criminal justice system and the impact of Charter Rights on the evolution of sexual assault law. Additionally, she explores the use of criminal law to target sex buying and pimping. She is an Associate Editor for Criminal Reports.
