Biography

Originally from the Netherlands, Janneke Hille Ris Lambers grew up in Thailand and the Philippines. She received her training in the USA, earning a Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia and a PhD from Duke University in North Carolina. After completing postdoctoral positions at the University of Minnesota and the University of California in Santa Barbara, she began her independent career as an Assistant Professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. In 2020, she moved back to Europe to start her position at ETH Zurich. Her research focuses on the forces shaping the structure of plant communities, investigating both abiotic and biotic factors, and their implications for community assembly in the context of global change. Her current projects include studying the costs and benefits of mast seeding among co-occurring forest trees, quantifying the biotic and abiotic axes of seedling regeneration niches for different tree species, understanding the climatic drivers of Alpine wildflower phenology and the implications of floral reassembly due to warming, and assessing predictable community shifts in response to changing climatic niches.
