Biography

Jannes Willems is an Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Amsterdam, specializing in spatial planning, water infrastructure, climate adaptation, and institutional analysis. His research focuses on the infrastructures that enable sustainability transformations and the techno-politics of infrastructure provision. Willems has been involved in interdisciplinary research teams and has conducted empirical fieldwork in Western European cities. He teaches bachelor's programs in Human Geography & Planning, and Future Planet Studies, as well as a master's program in Urban Regional Planning. Willems has received funding for several projects, and his work is informed by qualitative methods, including interviews and participatory observation. He completed his PhD at the University of Groningen, where his dissertation examined institutional change in the Dutch waterway sector. Additionally, Willems has been a visiting student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, conducting fieldwork in Brazil as part of a research project with the Federal University of Pará.
