Biography

Professor Janusz Bialek is a Principal Research Fellow in the Control Power Group within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London. Born and educated in Poland, he has held Full Professor positions at Newcastle University, Durham University, the University of Edinburgh, and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech), which is often referred to as the 'Russian MIT'. He resigned from Skoltech following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In addition to his academic roles, he has served as a Visiting Professor at Hong Kong University and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Professor Bialek is a Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator on multi-million-pound research grants funded by EPSRC, industry partners, the UK government, the European Commission, and the International Energy Agency. His published work primarily focuses on the integration of renewable generation into power systems, smart grids, power system dynamics, and strategies for preventing electricity blackouts in power markets. Currently, his main research interests include addressing the techno-economic challenges presented by the increasing penetration of Inverter Based Resources (IBRs) such as wind, photovoltaics (PV), and batteries, which are altering the fundamental technical characteristics of power systems.
