Biography

Jarad Mason is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University. He leads the Mason Research Group, focusing on the application of coordination chemistry, materials science, and nanotechnology to address fundamental science challenges in energy and sustainable development. The group places particular emphasis on developing chemical strategies to manipulate entropy and phase transitions in novel inorganic-organic materials. Key research highlights include the design of dense, crystalline solids capable of undergoing reversible, high-enthalpy phase transitions for advanced thermal energy storage solutions. Additionally, the group is working on innovative porous materials that exhibit previously inaccessible functionalities, such as intrinsically microporous liquids and self-cooling adsorbents. Graduate students in the Mason Group receive comprehensive training in synthetic chemistry, utilizing a wide array of analytical tools, including diffraction, adsorption techniques, electron microscopy, and calorimetry. Jarad earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in 2015 under the supervision of Jeffrey Long. Before joining the faculty at Harvard in January 2018, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Northwestern University, working with Chad Mirkin.
