Dr. Jared Farmer

Biography

Jared Farmer studies the histories of built and unbuilt environments with a temporal expertise in the long nineteenth century and regional expertise in the North American West. He is affiliated with the History Sociology Graduate Group, the Religious Studies Graduate Group, and the Initiative on the History of the Built Environment at the Weitzman School of Design. Professor Farmer has received fellowships and grants from esteemed institutions such as the American Council of Learned Societies and the National Humanities Center. He has been awarded the Hiett Prize in Humanities by the Dallas Institute and named an Andrew Carnegie Fellow by the Carnegie Corporation of New York. His publications include peer-reviewed essays in prominent journals, and his books have received multiple awards, including the Francis Parkman Prize and the Ray Allen Billington Prize. He regularly engages with various media as a book reviewer and has contributed essays to notable outlets like The Los Angeles Times and BBC Future. His recent project includes the 28th annual Leonard J. Arrington Mormon History Lecture, which will be published in expanded form in 2025. Additionally, he has led collaborative digital history projects such as 'Petrodelphia.'
